Prompt: choose outcome indicators

An indicator is how you know whether an outcome is happening. This prompt suggests realistic indicators for your outcomes — ones a small charity can actually collect — and how to gather each. You check every indicator is proportionate and genuinely measurable before you promise it to a funder.

What to paste in

Give the AI your outcomes, who you work with and how many, and how you currently collect data. It suggests one or two indicators per outcome, a proportionate way to measure each, and when to collect it.

What to check afterwards

Cut indicators too burdensome for your team or beneficiaries — over-measuring is a common mistake. For each, ask honestly whether you will collect it every time. Check any validated scale’s licence and suitability, and never claim to use one you have not adopted.

Validated scales such as the Warwick-Edinburgh Mental Wellbeing Scale (WEMWBS) require you to check licensing terms before use, so confirm suitability and any cost rather than assuming a scale is free (Source: University of Warwick, WEMWBS licensing terms, accessed 11 Jul 2026 — verified: NHS, commercial and non-commercial licences are priced separately and registration is checked).

Worked example

The illustrative example pairs light, collectable indicators with each outcome and flags any validated scale for a licence and suitability check.

CharityIQ can suggest indicators grounded in your theory of change and the data you already collect.
