Fundraising event

A quiz night, a gala dinner, a sponsored walk: all fundraising events, and all potentially exempt from VAT on ticket income and from tax on the profit.

The exemption depends on conditions including the purpose of the event, how it is promoted, and the number of events of the same kind held at the same location in a year. Exceed the limit and the exemption is lost for all of them, not just the extra one.

Check the conditions before selling tickets. Note also that ticket income is not eligible for Gift Aid — only a genuinely voluntary donation on top is. See the fundraising events exemption.
