Charity safeguarding self-audit checklist
How to use this: review each item honestly with your designated safeguarding lead. A “no” or “not sure” is a gap to act on. This is a prompt for competent review, not a compliance sign-off.
Policy and people
- [ ] A current safeguarding policy, reviewed at least annually and known to everyone.
- [ ] A named, trained designated safeguarding lead (and a deputy where possible).
- [ ] Trustees understand safeguarding is their collective responsibility.
Checks and recruitment
- [ ] The right DBS checks in place for roles that require them.
- [ ] Safer recruitment: references taken and identity checked for relevant roles.
- [ ] A record of who has been checked and when.
Training and awareness
- [ ] Staff and volunteers trained to recognise and report a concern.
- [ ] Everyone knows who the safeguarding lead is and how to raise a concern.
- [ ] Clear, simple reporting routes, including out of hours.
Reporting and review
- [ ] You know how to report to the local authority, the police, and the Charity Commission (serious incident).
- [ ] Local safeguarding contacts recorded and current.
- [ ] Safeguarding is a standing item at trustee meetings.
- [ ] You know the legal duty to refer to the DBS where someone is removed for causing harm.
